Richard Yao

Richard Yao is a business management consulting professional with over twenty years of experience working in and with corporations, not-for-profits and government agencies.

Richard’s expertise aims to improve the effectiveness of partnerships between the public sector, private sector and mission-focused social enterprises. He provides consulting in financial and grants development, nonprofit financial management and compliance, board and executive coaching, agency turn-around strategy planning, real property and infrastructure development, among others.

Richard serves as management consultant advisor to companies and projects requesting his expertise particularly in health care administration, human services and real estate development. He has advised and led nonprofits in the capacities of Acting ED, CFO, COO, CDO and Advisor to various nonprofit agencies, assisting with turnaround and rapid growth of the companies.

Richard’s prior experience included position of increasing leadership at MasterCard International and American Express, as well as, economic and community development leadership roles in the local governments of New Haven and Bridgeport, CT.

Since 2001, Richard has focused his work on social causes within mission driven not-for-profits guiding them in sustainable expansion, improvement in financial management, and restructuring to be more efficient. These causes focus on homeless reduction, affordable housing development, improved health outcomes, addressing food insecurity, and lifting the human spirit. Some of the agencies he has assisted include: Not On My Watch (human services), Alley Valley (mental health services), NYC Economic Development Corporation (FQHC development), CAIPA (MSO, IPA, healthcare reimbursement strategy), ParCare Community Health Network (primary care clinic), American Lung Association (lung health), International Treatment Preparedness Coalition (global HIV interventions), Manna of Life (food pantry), African American Planning Commission (shelters and affordable housing), 163rd Street Improvement Council (community services), and Millburn Harbor Inc.

Richard is a sought expert in the health and human services not-for-profit sector, focused on helping organizations expand their reach. His experience includes the development of a $300MM Managed Services Organization, the creation of a portfolio (over $450MM) of transitional and permanent supportive housing projects for the homeless, and programs that demonstrate measurable outcomes in healthcare, job and income, education, community vitality, among other areas of impact. Richard's success in helping nonprofits grow is attributed to his keen eye in structuring projects that are fundable and actionable.

Richard has a BA in Economics from Yale University and a MBA in Healthcare from Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Management in partnership with Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. He has also served as Adjunct Professor in CUNY’s Baruch Executive Healthcare MBA program and Undergraduate division and as guest lecturer at St. John's University Real Estate Institute. Richard is a Certified Low Income Housing Tax Credit Specialist by the National Center for Housing Management.
